TMS Therapy

Addiction is a very complex condition, a brain disease which makes a person pursuing the harmful substances despite knowing the consequences. People continue taking drugs, alcohol until the point of death. This has been spreading broadly over a short amount of time. People need to understand the repercussions and take hold of their life. With proper treatment, medications and strong willpower that is possible.

People who have been facing problems with depression for a long time now and the traditional treatment procedures didn’t help that much, TMS therapy is a non-invasive procedure of brain stimulation. It does not require any surgery or electrode implantation. It also does not require anesthesia or sedation.

What is TMS?

As stated before, this therapy is used for addicted patients who are having a hard time improving their condition by the traditional treatments. This process is basically a walk-in procedure, repetitive method which has shown effectiveness for depression. An electro-magnetic coil is placed near the forehead, from which small magnetic fields are emitted to stimulate the particular part of the brain which is responsible for mood control.

This therapy has shown its effectiveness for a long time, but there are still many researches to be done.

How It Works?

A treatment coil is placed near the head, right above the targeted area, called the prefrontal cortex. This particular part of our brain is responsible for controlling moods. Then small magnetic bursts are released to stimulate this particular part. TMS doesn’t target the whole brain; they only reach about 2 to 3 cm into the brain directly. The electric currents activate brain cells which control moods.

The initial treatments take up to four to six weeks period, five treatments each week. That means it takes up to 20 to 30 total treatments. The patients need to maintain the schedule of treatment meetings. Each treatment lasts about one hour, so it’s not going to be that hard to maintain consistency.

Make sure to open up to your doctor about everything so that he can understand in which situations this therapy should be performed. Consult your therapist about every condition. Before this therapy make sure you tell your therapist if you are in such situations listed below :

  • Pregnancy
  • Taking any medication
  • You have pre-existing medical condition
