Rational Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a particular type of cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy that was created or produced in the late 1980s by a doctor called Marsha M. Linehan to treat borderline personality disorders in a better way. In addition to it, this therapy is also used to treat other kinds of mental health disorders.

DBT is a therapy that is designed to help people amend patterns of behavior such as self-harm thoughts, suicidal thinking, and substance abuse. This therapy was initially intended to treat patients with minor personality disorders and suicidal thoughts. DBT main goal is to help an individual to build confidence and required abilities to successfully and effectively handle stressful situations.

An individual agonizing from mental illness or any intense emotional outbursts is more likely to engage in substance abuse as a form of self-medication. DBT is being used increasingly in the treatment processes. The core doctrine of DBT is to improve communication skills, coping skills, and self-image, which is critical to help an individual suffering from addiction and drug abuse.

DBT Therapies and Techniques in Addiction Treatment

DBT process focuses on altering the addict’s behavior and surroundings to help them achieve sobriety easier. It supports an addict to recover by learning some skills like mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotional regulation. These skills help an addict to stop using drugs and alcohol.

Some of the strategies are used in DBT include:

• Behavioral skills- A classroom program where an individual is taught some behavioral skills through homework assignments and essential role-playing by interacting with people.
• Individual Therapy- This therapy helps in recovering addicts to learn and apply techniques in real-life situations. This is held weekly in the entire program. In addition to it, therapists help an addict to decide how best he can apply those learning skills.
• Phone Coaching- If any of the problematic situations is occurred outside of individual therapy or skills training classes, an addict can call his therapist for guidance. The therapist coach an addict on how to use emotional regulation and distress tolerance techniques to manage feelings and how to cope with stress.
• Consulting Team- Consulting team focuses not only on patients but also on therapists and other healthcare providers. The consulting group encourages therapists to stay motivated so that the best care could be provided to patients. Other than these components, the recovering individual is given home assignments to perform better. This could include in controlling the behavior, emotions, and urges that an individual experience throughout the day.

The Four Modules of Dialectical Behavior Therapy

An individual who undergoes DBT is taught about effective change in his behavior using four main strategies:
• Mindfulness- This skill is a core and essential part of all the skills taught in the skill group. The core mindfulness ‘what’ skills are- Observe, Describe, and Participate. Non-judgmental, One-mindful, and Effective are the ‘how’ skills.
• Interpersonal Effectiveness- It helps an individual how to be assertive in a relationship but also helps how to keep that relationship positive and healthy.
• Distress Tolerance- The learning program helps to accept oneself and current circumstances. In addition to it, distraction, improving the movements, self-soothing, and thinking of pros and cons help an individual to tolerate and survive in crises.
• Emotional Regulation- It helps to recognize, categorize, and cope with negative emotions and reduce vulnerability by increasing the positive emotional experiences.
